16 Across the Vast Prairie

Gabe, Toby, Jenny, and Letty stayed camped in the woods west of town. Gabe went in for supplies a few times. He met several men that were going with Wyeth and talked to several plainsmen about the supplies they would need to go west. He was still using the name Richard Freemont when in town. He learned that a man by the name of Bonneville had taken wagons west over a place called south pass and all the way to the Green River the previous year. After talking to Wyeth, he bought a brand new wagon and harnesses for the four mules. He knew he was using the money that Jenny still figured belonged to someone else but he didn’t believe he had any other choice right now. He believed the wagon would help them carry the supplies they needed to see them through the winter and start a new life in the western wilderness. It had become clear to him and he believed to Jenny as well, that they were never going to find out who the money belonged to.

Gabe did not know where they were going or what they would find to the west. All he knew for sure was he was with the woman he loved and he must get far away from Charles Rousseau in order to keep her safe.

Wyeth had told them they had to be in Independence by the third week of April and that was almost three hundred miles to the west.
